  These college preparatory class focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and  critical   thinking. Thematic instruction unifies the year-- literary archetypes such as  the American Dream, The Hero’s Journey, and Utopia provide focus for standards-based instruction in   literature, including selected articles, poetry, and essays; grammar, and vocabulary.The freshman year provides an introduction to the SVHS writing program elements of essay structure,  including hook, thesis, topic sentences, concrete details, and commentary. Students compose literary and personal essays, and completion of the research paper is required for passing grade. In each year, Independent Reading programs are an important part of the English curriculum.
