Dear Students –
I would like to take this opportunity to help clarify for students who may still have questions regarding the display of the American flag on campus.  There has certainly been significant misunderstanding in the community surrounding the display of the American flag at our school.  We assured the public that the American flag is in classrooms, in our gym and flies proudly on the flag pole every day.  Students wearing flag apparel have not been prohibited from wearing as such, have not been asked to change, and there are no plans to change our dress code to prohibit the wearing of the flag on clothing.
What was not addressed in my "Letter to the Editor" was the issue regarding the proposed FFA t-shirt. This past Monday afternoon, we had an opportunity to speak with FFA student leadership to clarify the miscommunication. We felt that it was important to communicate with the FFA students before addressing this publicly with the broader school community.  We had good dialogue and it is this type of open communication, taking into consideration the needs of all SVHS students that we look forward to in the future.  FFA students are moving forward with the t-shirt as requested.
We realize that miscommunication, which is often heightened with social media, can and did turn into misunderstanding and confrontation.  As we move forward, we hope to have additional open conversations with you, and encourage students, staff, parents and the broader school community to engage with us in such conversations.  We appreciate you helping us with this.
Sincerely, Mrs. Hawing

Who wears Pink on Wednesday’s?  SVHS does!  Since the month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, we are asking that “on Wednesday’s we wear Pink” to support those around us struggling with breast cancer!  Look for an FFA member walking around campus on Wednesday’s to donate change to the cause!

Parents - Please note the communication to students regarding the concerns over the American flag on campus.  We hope this will help clarify any pending questions.  I would also like you to know that tomorrow's "Coffee with the Principal" will highlight the newly opened "College & Career Center" and the services that we offer here at SVHS.  Lisa Conner will be presenting and will take the lead.  Unfortunately, I will need to miss the coffee as I will be traveling to visit with my mother for family matters.  I do apologize for the late notice and will be available the following Friday, October 13 from 8:30-9:30 should any of you wish to speak with me personally.  You are welcome to drop by the office during that time and I will be available to you.  Thank you for your understanding,   Kathleen Hawing, Principal

Sunday, October 8 - We have an opportunity to help make our SVHS campus a little more beautiful, from about 8:45am - 12:00pm is our Day of Action!  We could really use some more volunteers for Sunday to help with our two larger projects: repainting the speed bumps and arrows in the parking lot, and spreading some new gravel in specific spots to help prevent mud puddles.  We'll also get some succulents to plant if we have enough people.  The more volunteers we have, the more projects we'll be able to do! Please contact Aaron Gildengorin at Any extra help we can get is very much appreciated!

We are looking for two parent volunteers to sit on the District Curriculum Advisory Committee (CAC)! Are you interested in knowing more about curriculum adoptions? Feel free to nominate yourself by sending your name to Sherry Anderson at   Per CAC bylaws - the two (2) parents representatives must be elected by the SVHS School Site Council.   Nominations will be open until October 13, 2017.
Parents -- make sure your senior's portrait is in their final yearbook. Book a senior portrait sitting online at , and then click on Services. Our photo studio, Moon Valley, offers yearbook-only sittings all the way up to full portrait sessions with multiple settings. All senior portraits must be taken by Moon Valley Studio by November 18, 2017, to appear in the 2018 Yearbook.
