Activity Description: Today you will research an African country. The information you find will help you create a poster next class.

Research:

Spend your lab time researching the African country you were assigned. Use the Five Themes of Geography below to guide your research. Start with the items highlighted in RED and then continue researching other things if you have time. Your notes will go into your notebook as entry #35 Five Themes:_____________ (The country you were assigned). Below are some links that will help you with your research. You might need to do a Google search for the specific thing you are looking for, like "Ethiopia literacy rate." Also, sketch a picture of their flag on the back of entry #34, noting what colors are where.

Five Themes of Geography Detail

As you research your country, go down the list of topics below to guide your research. You don’t have to cover every single topic. You just want to give a complete picture of your country.

1. Location:

-This should be straightforward. Where is it and what is it next to?

2. Place:

-Mountains, lakes, rivers, deserts, etc... What is the land like?

-Climate. Hot country? Freezing country? Rainy?

            -Population

            -Official language

            -Major religions

            -Type of government

-Major cities. Give a description of the capital city.

            -Most important holidays

-Historical highlights. When did it become independent?

-Current events. Is your county in the news for any reason?

-Staple diet. What do they eat?

            -Life Expectancy

            -Literacy Rate

3. Region

-“The South,” “New England” and “The Middle East” are regions. When you

think of “The Middle East” there are details that come to mind that reflect the

land and culture of the region. What are the similarities between your

country and the countries around it?

4. Movement

-Immigration, emigration, migration. Are people moving to, moving out of, or

moving around your country? If so, why?

-Imports. What are the top 3 products being brought in from other countries?

-Exports. What are the top 3 products they produce and ship to other countries?

5. Human-Environment Interaction

            -Land use

            -Vacation/Tourist locations

-Where do people live? Is the population concentrated in one part of the

country or are they distributed throughout?

            -Crops

            -Environmental issues

-Urban/Rural ratio. What percent of the population lives in cities?

-Economy. How do people make money?

-Major industries.  Tourism and the wine industry are key to the economy of

Sonoma. Does your country produce cars, electronic equipment, toys, etc…?
